Travelling to Vienna
Vienna is well connected by plane, train, and road. All routes feed into the Wiener Linien public transport network (U-Bahn, Straßenbahn, Bus).
By Plane
Vienna International Airport (VIE) lies about 18 km south-east of the city. Direct trains run to Vienna Main Station (Wien Hauptbahnhof); see below for the options during the workshop.
By Train
Almost all long-distance and international trains (ÖBB Railjet, ICE, Nightjet) arrive at Vienna Main Station (Wien Hauptbahnhof), just south of the city centre, with a direct U1 connection. Westbahn trains from Salzburg/Linz arrive at Wien Westbahnhof (U3, U6).
By Car
Central parking is scarce and expensive — leave the car at a Park + Ride garage ↗ next to a U-Bahn station and continue by transit.
Onward in Vienna
From every arrival point, connect to U-Bahn (subway), Straßenbahn (tram) or Bus. One Wiener Linien ticket covers all three within the city.
From the Airport
Airport to city centre
Please note: from 7 September 2026 until the end of October 2027 — i.e. during ParamSAT — the central S-Bahn line between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof is closed for renovation. The station Wien Mitte/Landstraße cannot be reached by train; the CAT runs as a bus and the S7 is cut short. The options below are the ones that will actually be running in February 2027. ÖBB Railjet / IC — recommended
Non-stop to Vienna Main Station (Wien Hauptbahnhof, U1) in ≈ 15 min · twice an hour. Some trains continue to Wien Meidling (U6, ≈ 30 min). Regular ÖBB ticket.
REX 7 (regional express)
Rerouted to Vienna Main Station (Wien Hauptbahnhof) in ≈ 20 min, stopping at Schwechat and Kaiserebersdorf. Regular ÖBB / Wiener Linien tickets valid. Does not serve Wien Mitte.
CAT by bus
Replacement bus of the City Airport Train, non-stop to Wien Mitte/Landstraße (U3, U4) in ≈ 21 min · every 12 min 7:00–19:00, otherwise every 15 min · last bus from the airport 23:37. Separate CAT fare. cityairporttrain.com ↗
S-Bahn S7
Runs only as far as St. Marx (outside the centre) during the closure, with transfer to trams 18 / 71 or bus 74A. Not recommended for reaching the city centre — take the Railjet or REX 7 instead.
Vienna Airport Bus
Direct buses from the airport, e.g. to Karlsplatz (U1, U2, U4), Morzinplatz/Schwedenplatz (≈ 22 min, U1, U4) and Hauptbahnhof/Westbahnhof. Timetables at viennaairportbus.com ↗.
From Hauptbahnhof
Transfer to the Wiener Linien network (U1, trams, buses) for onward travel. Allow a few extra minutes for the trip to and from the airport during the construction period.
