Getting around in Vienna
Vienna has excellent public transport. The Wiener Linien ↗ network covers subway, tram, bus and the S-Bahn across the core zone (the whole city) with a single ticket.
U-Bahn
The subway (lines U1–U4, U6) — fastest way across the city. Runs ≈ 5:00–0:30 and all night on Fridays, Saturdays and before public holidays.
Straßenbahn
Trams cover surface routes throughout Vienna; lines 1, 2, D and 71 circle the Ringstraße past the main sights.
S-Bahn
Suburban trains reaching the wider metropolitan area. Note: until end of October 2027 the central section between Praterstern and Hauptbahnhof (incl. Wien Mitte) is closed — use U-Bahn, tram or bus instead.
Bus
Fills gaps in the rail network and serves inner-city quarters. Night buses (N-lines) run after midnight on weekdays.

Plan a Trip
The WienMobil app ↗ (iOS & Android, English) or Google Maps both support Vienna transit with real-time departures.
Buy Tickets
Cheapest in the WienMobil app or online; otherwise at ticket machines in every U-Bahn station or at tobacconists (Trafik). On trams there is a machine on board (surcharge, coins or card). Bus drivers do not sell tickets.
Fares (2026)
Single ticket € 3.20 (€ 3.00 in the app) · 24-hour ticket € 10.20 · 7-day ticket € 28.90 (€ 25.20 digital). 48- and 72-hour tickets no longer exist. Current prices at wien.info ↗.
Validation
Paper tickets must be stamped in the blue validators before entering the U-Bahn platform or on board trams and buses. App tickets need no stamping. Fines for riding without a valid ticket are steep.
Bicycles
WienMobil Rad ↗ (operated by nextbike) has ≈ 250 stations across the city. Register free in the WienMobil or nextbike app; rides are billed per 30 minutes with a daily cap.
Taxi
Need a ride?
Call a taxi directly, order one in the WienMobil app, or head to one of the many taxi stands across the city. Uber and Bolt also operate in Vienna.
