Bio English (long)
Stefan Szeider is an Austrian computer scientist who works in the areas of algorithms, logic, computational complexity, and theoretical computer science. His research focuses on the design and analysis of efficient algorithms for hard problems that arise in Artificial Intelligence and Logic. He is a full professor at the Faculty of Informatics at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien), Austria, and head of the Algorithms and Complexity Group.
Previously, Szeider was Lecturer and then Reader at the University of Durham, UK (2004-2009) and a postdoc with Professor Stephen Cook’s Group at the University of Toronto (2002-2004). Szeider received his doctorate in Mathematics from the University of Vienna in 2001.
Szeider has been a co-chair of the Vienna Center for Logic and Algorithms which he founded together with Helmut Veith in 2012. Szeider chaired ALGO 2017, the largest annual gathering of researchers in the field of Algorithms in Europe.
Szeider has served on the editorial boards of several journals, including the Journal of Computer and System Sciences and the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research. He is the first Austrian Computer Scientist who received a grant from the European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant 2009). Szeider has been the principal investigator of several research projects, including projects from the EPSRC (UK), the Nuffield Foundation (UK), and the FWF (Austria). Szeider, whose Erdős Number is 2, has published over 200 articles in scientific journals and conference proceedings.
